Fees and Costs 

The cost of registration is:

N.B. For every 12 students one adult is free of charge. The chapter must pay for any adult responsible for fewer than 12 students.

Registration Forms 

Complete all paper forms adhering to specific instructions on the forms. Always use your official legal name. Make sure BOTH required signatures are provided on the forms. Incomplete forms will be returned to the sender with a $15 service charge. If you have any problems please contact Menlo JCL.

Code of Conduct 

Failure to follow these regulations will result in expulsion from the Menlo School campus and the CJCL Convention at the expense of the offender. Your signature on the registration form acknowledges that you have read the rules and regulations in this booklet and will abide by them. The following rules are in effect during the convention:
  1. Everyone must wear his/her nametag at all times. There will be a $5 charge for replacing each lost nametag and/or meal ticket.
  2. With the exception of commuting to and from the convention, NO DELEGATE WILL BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE CAMPUS.
  3. Treat the campus with respect. Your actions reflect on you, your school, and CJCL.
  4. Use, distribution, or possession of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, or fireworks of any sort is strictly prohibited.
  5. Tampering with fire alarms, fire-fighting equipment, or other safety and security equipment is strictly prohibited; it is a misdemeanor and punishable by law.
  6. The use of tobacco products is prohibited.
  7. No confetti, rice, or other similar materials are allowed on campus. The possession or use of such items will result in the disqualification of the school from the spirit award. Only masking or duct tape may be used to hang signs, banners, or decorations in designated areas only. Nothing may be taped to windows.
  8. Anybody inside the Douglass Hall construction site will be sent home immediately, no questions asked!
Menlo School, California Junior Classical League, or any designated representative shall not be held liable for any accident or mishap resulting in damage or injury while attending or traveling to or from the 1998 CJCL Convention.

Duties and Responsibilities of Sponsors and Chaperones 

  1. There must be at least one chaperone for every twelve delegates.
  2. Assignments for the convention will be placed in the convention packets. If you cannot attend an assigned activity, please notify the convention headquarters at once.
  3. Before the convention, sponsors and chaperones should review with their students and delegates the important information discussed in this booklet, in particular the Code of Conduct.
  4. Chaperones and sponsors should take attendance at all assemblies and insist on silence when those on stage are speaking. Spirit points will be deducted for rude behavior during the assembly.
  5. Chaperones and sponsors may not allow students to leave the Menlo School campus at any time during the convention without prior written approval from a parent or guardian.
  6. Chaperones and sponsors should reprimand any student who does not behave appropriately or who does not have a nametag clearly visible. Any problem should be brought to the attention of the student's sponsor and any state chair in the convention headquarters.

Mandatory Attendance 

  1. All delegates, chaperones, and sponsors must attend General Assemblies, the Chapter Fellowship, and the Voting Fellowship.
  2. Two voting delegates from each chapter must attend the Election Caucus and one must attend the Constitutional Amendments Caucus.
  1. Every delegate must take at least one test. State officers, Menlo School coordinators, and others helping with the convention are exempt.

Dress Code 

All delegates, sponsors, and chaperones should dress in good taste at all times. No bare feet. On Friday, Chapters will wear their Chapter T-shirt. On Saturday, Roman Dress must be worn until noon (except in sports competitions). At the Banquet and Dance, males should wear a dress shirt and slacks; females should wear a blouse and skirt, or a dress. Inappropriately dressed delegates (e.g. jeans or T-shirts) will not be admitted.

Accommodations  

Menlo School is not providing housing for any delegate. All visiting chapters that are not commuting must make their own housing arrangements (see attached flier for information).

Food 


Friday dinner will be available to any chapter that prepays. Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served on campus and are included in the registration fee. Saturday night banquet will be held in the tent and the dance will follow in the gym. Snack bar items will be available to delegates for sale throughout the convention in the campus area. Pizza will be available on Friday night for fellowship for chapters who request it on the chapter registration form. If you have special food needs (e.g. vegetarian), please note on the convention registration forms.

Bazaar 

The Bazaar will be held on Saturday, March 7, from 12:00-1:30 p.m. All chapters are encouraged to sell merchandise (excluding food) to raise money for their chapters. In order to reserve space, fill out the Bazaar Registration Form. Please return it by February 21, 1998. Menlo JCL must pre-approve all merchandise.

Elections 

Candidates for State or National Office

Qualifications:
1. All potential candidates must be members in good standing with the National Junior Classical League and the California Junior Classical League.

2. A candidate cannot succeed an officer from the same school as the candidate.

3. Anyone interested in running for state or national office must complete the CJCL candidates' nomination form in the registration packet and mail it by January 24, 1998 to:

Obligations:
All state and national officers must:

1. Be currently enrolled in a classical language class for the entire term in office or have completed all classical language courses available at his/her school.

2. Attend the annual CJCL state convention.

3. Must attend CJCL executive board meetings.

Candidates' Orientation

Candidates must meet with the Parliamentarian upon arrival at the convention to have their campaign materials and any candidates' speech corrections approved.

Election Caucus

Two delegates from every chapter must attend the election caucus during Saturday breakfast in order for the chapter to maintain its voting rights. Candidates for state and national office will give two-minute speeches and answer questions regarding their candidacy following their speeches.

Meetings 

Amendments Caucus

Proposed amendments to the CJCL constitution will be discussed on Saturday from 1:00-1:30pm. One delegate from every chapter must attend. Delegates will be expected to demonstrate a working knowledge of the CJCL Constitution. Delegates attending this caucus will report these amendments to their chapters during voting fellowship on Saturday afternoon. The amendments will be voted on in the Fellowship that afternoon before the final general assembly.

Fellowship

On Friday night, all chapters will have a chance to gather and discuss the day's events and to prepare for Saturday. On Saturday afternoon all delegates will meet with their chapter to vote on the candidates and amendments.

Scholarship 

The Junior Classical League offers several scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue their study of classics in college. Please fill out the enclosed application form and send it to Lura Wallace. All applications must be postmarked by February 14, 1998:

Workshops 

There will be several 45-minute workshops on areas of special interest. The Toga Workshop will be a session to improve the authenticity of California's classical dress. Bring the following:

viri: an old, solid-colored king-size sheet for toga and/or a piece of solid-colored material roughly 45" in width and twice the distance from mid-calf to shoulder in length for a tunica; something for a tie belt (clothesline is fine).

feminae: an old, solid-colored queen- or king-sized sheet or a piece of soft, solid-colored material roughly 60 x 85 inches; something for one or two tie belts (i.e. clothesline) or an attractive cord about three yards long; two large, decorative buttons with an eye on the back for a safety pin.
