CONTEST OVERVIEW
The creator/originator of all artwork and projects must attend convention to submit, exhibit, and win any contest. All pre-convention contest materials are due on January 24, 1998. All other contests must be re-registered on Friday night except academic testing.
 
PRE-CONVENTION CONTESTS

Audio/Visual (Art) 

Only VHS tapes fully prepared by the delegate are permitted. Slide presentations must be transferred onto video tape. The theme must pertain to Latin or classical studies. The maximum length is 12 minutes. No credits, names or school names should appear on the tape; rather they must appear on a 3x5 card accompanying the submission. However, give proper credit to pre-recorded music and media. Use a clean tape.

Computer Programming (Art) 

There is a limit of one entry per delegate. Participants will submit the source code and the compiled program, which should have some relevance to Latin, Classical Studies, or JCL. The source code must be the sole work of the entrant. However, function libraries, pre-compiled headers, dynamic-linking libraries, and other commercial programming aids may be used. These include the standard pre-compiled libraries, headers, and other similar documents. Acceptable languages include Pascal, C and C++. The application must be compiled such that it can be run on Apple Macintosh System 6, Microsoft Windows 95, MS-DOS 5.0, or a more recent version of any of these programs.

In addition, each entrant must submit a typed description of his or her program, including bug lists (if necessary), special instructions, and program notes. The entrant must specifically note the development interface, and any hardware requirements specific to the program. The entrant must also note in this file: his or her name, telephone number, and other pertinent information. If there is a problem in judging the program, the entrant will be notified. Submitted applications remain the sole property of the participant, and no rights of the participant shall be infringed upon.

When submitted, the entry must include:

  1. Two hard copies of the source code printed and turned in with the program.
  2. Two hard copies of the typed description.
  3. On a 3.5" floppy disk, in either Macintosh or IBM-PC format, one copy of the source code of the program in ASCII, SimpleText or TeachText.
  4. On the same disk, one copy of the compiled application.
  5. On the same disk, one copy of the typed description of the program.
If the program, source code, and description do not fit on one disk, they may be compressed or combined into a single file using in tar, PKZIP (v. 2.04g) or StuffIt format. Furthermore, all floppy disks should be at high density 1.44 MB.

Modern Myth (Art) 

A student may enter only ONE modern myth. The myth must be 500-1200 words long, including all articles and prepositions. The total number of words must be noted in the top right hand corner on the cover sheet. Myths of less than 500 words or more than 1200 words will lose one point per 100 words. The entry MUST be typed and double-spaced with numbered pages. The entry may be in prose or verse. Do not provide any information about the entrant anywhere other than the cover page.

Topics:

    Write an original myth to explain the existence of some phenomenon in nature or modern culture (it should use classical Greek OR Roman mythological characters but not a combination of both; new, invented characters with classical names may also be used).
    Compose a classical myth with a plot set in modern time. The writer must identify the original myth in a postscript to the story.
    A new myth using classical figures with the creation of minor new characters is allowed (e.g. a new Hercules story).
Requirements:
 
In all categories, the writer should be careful not to contradict existing myths. New characters and/or new adventures may be invented, but no tampering with basic, traditional mythology should occur. Each entry must include a separate cover sheet with the delegate's name, school and level of Latin. A teacher's signature is required to verify that the entry is the sole work of the entrant and that the teacher has read and approved the entry. Please send two copies with two cover sheets attached.

Cover sheet format:

Original Poetry (Art) 

A student may enter only ONE poem. The poem must be an original work in English in any meter or verse and must be based on the convention theme, Patria...communis est parens omnium nostrum. Entries must be typed and double-spaced. A cover sheet MUST be sent with the entry, identical to the cover sheet used for the Modern Myth.

Original Slogan (Art) 

The slogan or saying should help publicize Latin or JCL and fit on a bumper sticker or button. Winners of this contest should be aware that once submitted, the slogan becomes property of CJCL and may be used for publicity. This year there will be two categories: Latin Slogan and English Slogan. Every delegate may enter one in each category. The Latin slogan should have the English translation on the same side of the index card. Each entry must be on a 3x5 index card. The slogan should be written on the front side of the index card. The delegate's name, school, city, teacher, grade level, Latin level, and teacher's signature of approval should be written on the back of the index card. The writing on the card must be neatly printed in ink. Entries will be judged on their creativity and adherence to Latin themes.

Publicity Contest (Chapter) 

Each JCL chapter is eligible to enter the CJCL Publicity Contest. A chapter does not have to be present at the CJCL Convention in order to win. Since the purpose of the California Publicity Contest is to promote, all publicity items must be essentially about JCL, Latin or classical studies. All articles in this contest must have been written or initiated by the club that submits them. The contest materials must bear dates from March 1, 1997 through February 7, 1998. The publicity portfolios will be judged according to NJCL publicity contest rules.

Publicity Rules:

Newspaper and magazine articles must be submitted in 8.5x11 inch format. This can be a photocopy or original mounted to plain bond and folded over if necessary. Each page must list the name of the school, the type of newspaper--school, daily, or weekly. Dateline and name of the newspaper must accompany each article. The following point totals are used:

Newspapers:

City/local newspapers published at least 5 days per week, 7 points per column-inch.
 
Pictures less than 3 × 4" 20 pts 
Pictures larger than 3 × 4" 30 pts 
Pictures larger than 8" in any dimension  40 pts
City/local newspapers published one to four times per week, church newspapers and bulletins, or foreign language journals (no points for JCL publications or classical journals), 5 points per column-inch

Radio and TV

Miscellaneous Creative Publicity Enclose a self-addressed post card for acknowledgment of receipt of materials. It is the responsibility of the entrant to pick up the publicity portfolios at the end of the convention in the contest office. Entries must be postmarked by February 7, 1998. Send entries to:

State Scrapbook (Spirit) 


Each JCL chapter is eligible for 10% bonus spirit points. Only items sent for inclusion in the CJCL scrapbook are counted. For 7% spirit points postmark the following items by December 6, 1997: a group photo of your chapter's officers taken in your patria (i.e. Latin room) and 10 items. Photos, tickets stubs and publicity fliers are acceptable. All people in photos must be clearly identified by first and last name. For an additional 3% spirit points bring 10 more items for the scrapbook to convention. Register the materials with the historian at registration. Please do not fold submissions. Send items to:

State T-shirt Design Contest


All CJCL members are encouraged to submit T-shirt designs for the CJCL T-shirt. The design must include: "California Junior Classical League" and the theme Patria...communis est parens omnium nostrum, and a picture related to the classics. The design must be on 8.5x11 inch paper in ink. The convention chairs will make the final decision. If chosen, the winning artist must make the design print ready. Bear in mind that prizes are given at Nationals in the following areas: Best use of color, Best artistic design, Best use of convention theme, Best originality, Most humorous. The winner will be reimbursed the normal $50 Convention fee. All entries must be submitted by January 17, 1998 to Paul Khuri-Yakub.
