Browser Requirements:

Ok, I'll give it to you straight. You're better off with version 4 of Netscape or Microsoft's browsers. If you find the egg, you're better off w/ IE4. Actually, Netscape 3 should probably run fine, but IE3 definitely does not.

These pages have been tested with Netscape Navigator 2.02, 3.01, 3.04 & 4.04; Netscape Communicator 4.03; Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 3 for the Mac, 3 for Win95, 4 and 4.01.

Do NOT try to run the Convention Credits page on IE4 for the Mac. It may crash.

Here's where to get these browsers:

Browser Link
Netscape Communicator (v4) Get Netscape Now!
Microsoft Internet Explorer (v4) Get Microsoft Internet Explorer Now!
NCSA Mosaic (Windows) (v3) Get Mosaic for Windows Now!
NCSA Mosaic (Mac) (v2) Get Mosaic for the Mac Now!
Cello (v1) Get Cello Now!

Most of the pages here do not have special requirements; as long as your browser supports multiple fonts, tables and images, you'll be able to see the documents.  However, there are a few that require special features.  In order to get the most out of this website, you'll need a browser that supports graphical frames (i.e. non-lynx, cello; actually, if you don't have those, you'd just get the text-only menu with no frames).  The regular menu requires a forms and JavaScript-compliant browser.  The following table summarizes these requirements:

Web page: Requirements:
The Regular Menu JavaScript, forms, frames
The Text Menu forms (although it works with Lynx!)
All pages fonts, tables, images.

Or, if you aren't a cyberhead, we have this other table.

Browser: Page:
Netscape 1 The Whole Thing
Netscape 2 The Text Page
Netscape 3, 4 / Communicator The Regular Page
Internet Explorer 3 for the Mac The Regular Page
Internet Explorer 3 for Win95/NT The Text Page
Lynx, Cello, Mosaic The Whole Thing

About Advanced Features (JavaScript, JScript, CGI & Cookies):

We do use frames for this site to switch between pages. If your browser doesn't do frames, then (hopefully) this web site backs down gracefully (i.e. it appears more like a non-frames site).

Some parts of this web site employ very advanced techniques in order to improve your viewing experience. Specifically, we use JavaScript(tm) on the Regular Menu in order to switch pages. JavaScript is also used for the Convention Countdown on the bottom of the Regular Menu. I have tried hard to ensure that the JavaScript code works with both Netscape and Microsoft's flavors--the pages do work across version 4 of both vender's browsers. (JavaScript 1.2 and JScript 2 (3?)). If you load the page and see nothing, chances are your browser doesn't do JavaScript.

For the most part, we don't use CGI anywhere--except for the counters (thanks to Best internet) and the IP and time stuff (thanks to Schaft www.schaft.com).

Version 5.0 does NOT use ANY cookies ANYWHERE. Version 4 did. The auto-remember functionality was removed because Phil (and eventually Darrick) hated it.

Security & Privacy:

We do not collect or sell information about the people who visit this site. We do not track where you go on this site. Furthermore, once you leave this web site, we do not monitor your activities in any way. Finally, we do not employ any code that will harm your computer.

Eggs:

Yes, there is an 'easter egg' on this web page. No, I won't tell you where it is or how to get it. Menlo JCL is not responsible for anything contained on the easter egg page. In fact, the whole easter egg idea was dreamed up by the Registration Chair, not them. No, you can not and should not send people flame mail about this. Maybe, if you're lucky, we'll put it on the main page. Or maybe we won't. We'll see.

Fonts:

In order to keep the appearance of this website consistent with the booklet, this website employs three fonts at its core.  These fonts are Times New Roman, Arial, and Verdana.  You can download all of them off of Microsoft's web site.

To view the text as Times New Roman, you will need to change your browser's default font to Times New Roman.  See your browser documentation for details.

Font Installation Instructions (Windows 95/NT):

  1. Download the file and run it.  It will install automatically.
  2. Restart your browser.

Font Installation Instructions (Windows 3.x):

  1. Download the file and run it.  It will decompress the font files.
  2. Open the Fonts control panel and click Install New Font.  Navigate to the directory where the font files decompressed, select the fonts, and click OK.
  3. Restart your browser.

Font Installation Instructions (Macintosh):

  1. Download the file.  If it does not automatically decompress, double click the file to decompress it.  When it is done decompressing, drag all the files to the Fonts folder in the System folder.
  2. Restart your browser.

Download instructions:

  1. Hold down Shift (Windows) or Option (Macintosh) and click on the link.

If you wondered where you can get these fonts, here's a table:

  Windows 95/NT Windows 3.x Macintosh
Verdana  verdan32.exe (321K, Self Install) verdana.exe (162K, Self Extract) Verdana.sit.hqx (208K BinHex)
